Symposium SSP - Habitat for Humanity
Just as Suhrid pointed out, we started having Symposium SSPs again and today we all had a choice of one of three sites. A group of some 30 MF members went to constructions sites of new houses in the Lower 9th Ward, one of the most Katrina-affected areas of New Orleans.
Habitat for Humanity is constructing new homes there with the help of volunteer groups. Please see: http://www.habitat-nola.org/.
We were first instructed of what needed to be done and how to behave on construction sites. We then split up into four smaller groups, each working in or on a different house. The main task for many seemed painting doors, walls and the outside of the houses, caulking (using gun-like tools that will cracks between walls and frames with material to seal them) and some nailing. Many of us did this type of work for the very first time, so not only did we help but we also learned.
The sun was beating down on us but spirits were high and we all enjoyed the projects a lot. It's those few hours that we were able to put into helping reconstruct New Orleans, putting our hands to use and making a small but very useful impact.
Hoping this will be continued...
